Example: Interactive chart
Back to overview
This interactive bubble chart (which appears to confirm a common preconception...) is an example of how tabular data can be processed and presented. It shows the share of female car owners as a function of the power of each vehicle type. The chart enables viewers to zoom and pan the data as they like. Searching for a particular manufacturer or model results in a list of matches. The chart can be centered on any of the results by clicking the "Zoom" button. This example takes advantage of the D3 library. A canvas element is used in order to smoothly display the > 6,000 data points. To keep things clear, the exact manufacturer and model types were gently simplified.
Car fleet in Germany as of 1.1.2020
Data source: German Motor Transport Authority, Inventory of motor vehicles and trailers grouped by manufacturers and trade names, accessed on 30.9.2021; Data license by-2-0. The share of female owners presented here is somewhat too low since the source data does not contain the number of male owners, but only the total number of cars, including those owned by legal entities. I have used valuable information from this template to create the zoomable canvas element.
